As industry leaders, we’re here to share our knowledge for a relaxed transition.
Prior to Listing Your Home
What’s a realtor’s favorite advice? Declutter! While listing your house, your realtor is able to give you tips for staging and making your space look sale-ready. Below are helpful tips from homeowners and how Corrigan Moving can help!
- Free boxes for decluttering! Did you know that Corrigan customers can receive free used boxes when booking their move*? When available, our customers can acquire various sized boxes for free. Our offices also stock a variety of moving product for purchase, such as bubble wrap, packing paper and tape. Start decluttering and packing before your realtor takes your house pictures and make your house shine in the pictures. Many customers call Corrigan and reserve a move date prior to listing their homes for this reason. Move dates can be changed once your house is under contract, so capitalize on as many benefits as you can!
- Is the garage a mess? Wardrobe boxes may be your solution! Wardrobe boxes are tall and large, perfect for handling bulky items. You can leave the top of the wardrobe box open to organize and store sports equipment, children’s toys and long handled yard tools. Doing so will make your garage look cleaner and larger with minimal effort! Click here for details about wardrobe boxes.
- Repair your walls like a professional. You’re likely to have painted walls and small nail holes that need touched up, make sure to do repair work prior to your real-estate photos. Needing to match paint colors? Using a utility knife (be careful!), shallowly remove a quarter size hole from the top layer of paint. It is best to do this from an unnoticeable spot, such as behind furniture or a low corner. Take that small paint sample to your local hardware store or paint shop, where they have the tools to match your paint color perfectly. With a drywall patch kit, touch up your holes and paint with your matching touch up paint. Good as new! Here is a good demonstration of how to get the perfect paint chip.
During Showings
Once your home is listed, you’ll spend time away to allow buyers go through and envision themselves living there. Many homeowners who have used Corrigan Moving have shared tips to make the time away during showings easier.
- Pack a suitcase. During showings, many homeowners want to have their valuable items and personal documents secure. Many people have found packing a small suitcase with these items to be an easy way to grab and go during a showing.
- Consider a local pet daycare. Cats and dogs will also require a place to go during showings. Finding a local doggy daycare or daily pet care facility is a great way to keep your pets happy and safe.
- Entertain the kiddos! Parents know getting small kids out the door can be a challenge. Packing a bag with games, small toys or art supplies is always a great way to keep them entertained and happy when away from home.
- Free, free, free! Look for free ways to pass the time during showings. If showings are planned back-to-back, you are likely to find yourself gone for hours at a time. Going to your local park, farmers market, or libraries are free and easy ways to pass time. If you’re moving nearby, try booking a guided tour around your new city. Even if you are familiar with your new town, you could be surprised by learning new and interesting history!
Offer: Accepted!
Bravo! Now that your home is under contract, the actual work begins. Providing you have not contacted Corrigan Moving yet for an in-home or virtual estimate, now’s the time! Your Corrigan representative will create a custom moving quote based on the services you’re needing. Following are some things to take into consideration before your move consultation.
- Determine who’s packing. Corrigan Moving provides full packing service. We also offer packing on a smaller scale, such as boxing up only mattresses, TVs or fragile items. Decide whether there is anything you would like Corrigan to pack or if you plan to handle everything yourself before your move consultant arrives. For more details on packing yourself, click here.
- Decide what’s you are moving. Building a plan for items to move ahead of your move survey is imperative to acquiring an accurate estimate. A Corrigan sales representative will go room by room throughout your home to get a thorough and detailed inventory to accurately estimate the scope of your relocation. Your move inventory can always be changed, however you will want to have an understanding of what items you wish to have handled by Corrigan.
- Identify donation locations. For those items you would like to donate, investigate local thrift stores and secondhand shops. Many provide free pickup services for donated items, however these can be booked weeks in advance. Plan ahead and schedule a donation pickup prior to the move date. Corrigan is proud to support Habitat for Humanity, who has several locations offering free donation pick up.
- Research what can and cannot be moved. Moving companies cannot transport items such as gasoline containers, chemicals or anything caustic (a comprehensive list of prohibited items can be found here). Your city might have resources or a local return drive where they’ll receive hazardous items and electronics for proper disposal. Waste Management has additional details on properly disposing your hazardous household items.
New Home Sweet Home
You’ve done it! It is your first night in your new home. Where do you start in the field of boxes? Here are some tips to make your first night in the new home a fun and effortless transition for everyone.
- Pack bedding separately. The last thing you don’t want to do following a long move day is hunt for your bedding. Packing fresh sheets and bedding in a suitcase will make them effortless to find to make the bed when you’re about to hit the hay.
- Pack an “open first” box. Having a box full of necessities will make the first night a piece of cake. Suggested items are paper towels and plates, plastic utensils, bar soap and toilet paper. A small new activity, like a coloring book or puzzle for kids is a great way to keep them entertained as you are settling in. Don’t forget a new toy or treats for Whiskers and Fido!
- Order delivery! Your first dinner in your new house is one to remember. Begin making memories by ordering in from a local restaurant and enjoy finding new places to dine.
- Take a walk in your new neighborhood. You’ve earned a pause! Taking a walk through your new neighborhood is a wonderful way to take a mental break, meet new friends and explore your new surroundings.
